In the recorder, one physical quantity is used as a function of another physical quantity.  It is similar to a strip chart recorder, but in that the chart paper moves relative to a variable amount instead of time.  The structure of the X-Y recorder is shown in the figure.

Principle - The principle of X-Y recorder is also similar to strip chart recorder, that is, it also works on electromechanical principle.  The X Y recorder records one variable against another.  The pen present in it moves in the X and Y-direction while the graph paper remains stationary.  In this the movement process of recording is controlled by servo feedback system and self-balancing potentiometer.

Working Method - In this, the input signals enter each part of the channel through an attenuator, where they are adjusted to the pre-scale range (0-5 mV or 0-20mA) of the appropriate recorder.  go.  After this the signal is then passed through the balancing circuit where it is compared to an instruction voltage. Is performed .  The error signal received from both these signals is given to the chopper or vibrator which converts the DC signal into alternating signal.  This alternating signal is amplified to drive the servo motor, which is used to balance the system, and the servo motor balances it when the amount to be recorded changes.  In this way one variable quantity is recorded with respect to another variable quantity i.e. the function is drawn on graph paper.

X-Y Recorders

A pen records two signals simultaneously by deflecting balance or galvanometer light beam technique.  One pointer moves the pen towards the X-axis and the other pointer moves the pen towards the Y-axis.  With its help, recording of non-independent variable quantity with respect to an independent variable is obtained, such as drawing the characteristics of a tube.

Most X-Y recorders are self-balanced potentiometers.  This recorder has DC as input.  voltage is used.  Generally, pens with capillary type ink are used.  Although high speed machines mostly use point type recording.  X - Y Recorder performs many processes like measurement, drawing, curve fitting etc. simultaneously in a few seconds.  It is a device with less speed than the oscilloscope and faster than the hand operated devices.

X - Y recorder is an instrument in which a graphic record of the relationship between two variables is displayed.  The X Y recorder has a lot of changes.  The electromotive force (emf) is used in its operation.  A pair of servo systems is present in the X-Y recorder.  This servo system makes the movement of the recording pen on two axes with the help of proper sliding.

The X - Y recorder has a sensitivity of 10 mV / mm , slewing speed 1.5 ms and a frequency response of about 6 Hz ( for both axes ).  The chart size is approximately 22 cm x 28 cm or 28 cm x 44 cm.  The accuracy of the X-Y recording is approximately ± 0.3%.

X-Y recording is a variant of servo-recording and is used for recording a variable amount on one axis and another variable amount on the other axis.

Applications - The applications of X - Y recorder are

  • For drawing speed torque characteristics of motors,
  • Regulation curves of power supplies,
  • Plotting the characteristics of active devices,
  • Plotting the stress-strain curve,
  • Drawing hysteresis curve,
  • Electrical characterization of a material,
  • Lift drag wind tunnel test
